Workshop organized by the FACP  on the theme : " Teenage mothers in Cameroon : a serious social issue”

Jean Vivien HABYARIMANA, project manager of the association points out that noticeable increase of the problem is due to extreme poverty in the population and that it leads to a high rate of AIDS among girls, and teenage mothers who have no access to education. Many causes can explain this phenomenon:
Families disintegrate and no longer fill in their traditional educative role.
Young people are obliged to leave school for lack of financial means and go for prostitution – The economical situation in Cameroon does not allow to implement programs of support for young people and compromises the social and economical insertion of young girls who become more vulnerable to prostitution : to meet with their basic needs, girls have early sex with many different partners. Access to social aids is difficult. The result is a multiplication of unwanted pregnancies and at birth, the children are not recognized by their father in a majority of cases.

.. FACP did a survey of girl mothers in Douala and realized that the city as gateway to Cameroon by air, sea or land is a considerable melting pot Unfortunately, family planning is not implemented by ignorance and illiteracy. FACP therefore wishes to help girl mothers and launch a program of action to facilitate their social and economical insertion with literacy classes, family planning,
activities generating a revenue, training and information on Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Women today need the training and to organize themselves in joint activity groups. FACP appeals to NGOs, international foundations, embassies and volunteers to fulfil this mission.

These women need help !

Patricia Nwokoye and Gloria  Ndidi presented Mom’s club International Nigeria (recently accepted as a member association) during the World Movement of Mothers
AGM in Oxford (UK) – April 08

Our aim is to improve the live conditions of mothers and children through the empowerment of women. Our actions mainly focus on defending their rights, micro credit projects, health and literacy. We also take special care of handicapped children.

We recently renewed the orphanage that was seriously damaged and project to rebuild a house to welcome handicapped adults.

We are also deeply affected by the AIDS pandemy and try to increase public awareness about this illness and its tragic consequences.

We have built a solidarity network for the orphanage : this network provides us with food, clothes, and basic needs. This network is very
active around Christmas, we take advantage of this time when people
are particulary generous.

Funding is provided by government and rich families.

When Art has the power to transform…

Crear Vale La Pena is an Argentinean NGO founded in 1993 by Ines Sanguinetti – sociologist, dancer and choreographer.

Poverty affects more and more young people in Argentina. CVLP is an ongoing project in social transformation through art in order to fight against social exclusion and the vicious circle of poverty.

CVLP supports programmes of artistic expression and cultural activities, offering to young people the chance to escape from poverty and forge the links which build long-term social cohesion.

EDUCATION = ART + SOCIAL ORGANISATION :

Artistic education is a powerful means of social transformation for individuals living at risk and in poverty.
"education = art + social organisation" is a programme which brings together education, artistic production and social organisation as tools for personal and community development. This programme aims to allow vulnerable young people to improve their quality of life and to acquire values such as, caring about others, taking an active part in civic life and social responsibility.

The work of Crear Vale la Pena began in the north of Greater Buenos Aires. It has since developed in different places in Latin America and Europe: theatres, schools, universities, cultural centres and festivals…

Most of those who take part, study, give classes or run these different centres are women, including young mothers. Mothers are the first victims of exclusion in the context of unemployment and difficult circumstances for bringing up children.

In the last 12 years, CVLP has trained 5,400 young people, that is, 600 a year, taking part in 60 workshops. Some of these young people have already reached a professional standard and take part in music and dance productions.

CVLP also offers training in various disciplines to women in difficult circumstances to help them break out of their situation.
CVLP is part of the Latin-American Network for Art and Social Transformation, and has made 4 cultural exchanges to Germany.

For this reason a similar project has begun in Germany targeting discrimination against young Germans of immigrant origin: "Kiel Learning from the South".
This programme applies the strategy of "Art+ Social
Transformation", succeeding in bringing about a change in the Western view of North-South relations.

Crear Vale la Pena is a valuable model and reference point in the field of art and social organisation.
